Protect Your Personal Spaces with Haven

Haven is an innovative Android application designed for individuals who seek to safeguard their personal spaces and belongings without sacrificing their privacy. Utilizing on-device sensors, Haven offers comprehensive monitoring and protection for physical environments.

Transform Your Android Device

Haven transforms any Android smartphone into a motion, sound, vibration, and light detector, vigilantly watching for unexpected guests and unwanted intruders. This application is particularly beneficial for:

  • Investigative journalists

  • Human rights defenders

  • Individuals at risk of forced disappearance

By harnessing the array of sensors found in smartphones and integrating the world’s most secure communication technologies, such as Signal and Tor, Haven empowers citizens to protect themselves against those who seek to silence them.

Project Team

The development of Haven was a collaborative effort between the Freedom of the Press Foundation and Guardian Project. Initial funding for the prototype was generously provided by FPF. If you wish to support ongoing development, donations can be made through their site: Support Haven.

Safety through Sensors

Haven prioritizes user privacy by only saving images and sounds triggered by motion or volume, storing all data locally on the device. Users can strategically position their device’s camera to capture visible motion or discreetly set their phone to listen for noises. Receive secure notifications of intrusion events instantly and access logs remotely or at your convenience.

Monitored Sensors

The following sensors are monitored for measurable changes, which are then recorded in an event log on the device:

  • Accelerometer: Detects motion and vibration of the phone

  • Camera: Captures motion in the phone’s visible surroundings using the front or back camera

  • Microphone: Records noises in the environment

  • Light: Monitors changes in light from the ambient light sensor

  • Power: Detects when the device is unplugged or experiences power loss/shutdown
