Root or Plugins Requirement

The requirements for root and plugins are determined by the Substratum theme engine and how overlays function on Android, rather than the theme code itself:

• Nougat: Requires root or a custom OMS-ready ROM. For Samsung Nougat, a separate paid add-on from the Substratum team is necessary.


• Oreo: Requires root, a custom Sysserv ROM, or a paid add-on from the Substratum team to theme without root via ADB.


• Samsung Pie (S9, S9+, NOTE 9 only): Requires root or a paid add-on to theme without root via ADB.


• Pie: Root is mandatory to use any Substratum theme.


• Android 10: Root is required for all Substratum themes. Currently, we support OxygenOS and AOSP ROMs.

Installation Instructions

1. Ensure you have everything necessary to use the Substratum theme engine.


2. Download the Substratum theme engine app and the Swift Dark theme. Upon opening the Substratum app, you will find the theme listed inside.


3. Select your system from the menu at the top, choose the apps you wish to theme, and proceed with the installation.


4. Wait for all overlays to install, then reboot your device.

Note: If you're using Oreo or Pie, you may need to enable all overlays in the "Manager" within the Substratum app after installation and rebooting for them to function correctly. Be sure to read the extended instructions in the Documentation.

Important: Remember to uninstall all overlays before upgrading your firmware (OTA)!
