Final Days of the Civil War

After Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina, fell to the Union in early 1865, Jefferson Davis made a significant decision by handing over the supreme command of the Confederate army to General Lee. Despite this change in leadership, the Union armies continued their relentless advance through North Carolina, capturing key locations such as Fayetteville, Bentonville, Goldsboro, and Raleigh by mid-April.

Last Attempts at Resistance

Exhausted from the prolonged siege of Petersburg and Richmond, Lee's forces launched a final attempt at resistance by attacking and capturing Fort Stedman on March 25. However, a rapid counterattack by Union forces reversed this fleeting victory. On the night of April 2nd, the Confederate army evacuated Richmond, marking a pivotal moment in the war.

Surrender and Conclusion of the War

For the following week, the Union army relentlessly pursued the Confederates along the Appomattox River, effectively exhausting any chance of escape. On April 9th, Grant accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. Shortly thereafter, on April 26th, Sherman accepted Johnston's surrender at Durham Station, North Carolina, ultimately bringing an end to the American Civil War and the institution of slavery in the United States.
